在一開始牙結石還在表面的時候，洗牙就好，即便有些深入，做牙根整平術也可以，如果真的有點嚴重，強忍著還不就醫，就需要做牙周翻瓣手術了，如果再不治療，下次就醫，就得直接拔牙了。

主要原因有兩個，第一個是牙周病容易侵蝕齒槽骨，植牙療程基本上都會持續一段時間，如果是極輕度牙周病，還可能邊治療邊安排植牙，如果是重度牙周病，齒槽骨都被吃掉了，根本不可能有辦法讓植體安穩著陸，即便進行 補骨粉手術 ，在有牙周病的情況下，齒槽骨也是長不出來的。

再來就是即使輕度牙周病沒有影響到齒槽骨，就算植牙過程中也真的沒有惡化，還是可能會出現問題：原因是植牙植體不如健康牙根，在抵抗病菌的能力上幾乎為零，所以一旦牙周殘留著病菌，很快就會引發植體周圍炎，嚴重的話，植體可能會自動脫落，即便不脫落，為了治療植體周圍炎，可能也得先移除植體。
