在牙周病治療的病人口內, 經常會發現有如此刷牙過度的情形. 當您越心急的想把牙齒刷乾淨, 而大力將牙齒作橫向的刷洗時, 就好像在鋸樹木一樣, 牙齒會被刷出一道凹痕的. 剛開始時, 先是牙肉因過度的受外力刺激, 而開始萎縮, 而開始會有一些敏感的狀況. 此時若沒有自己意識到, 或是醫師提醒這個問題, 牙齦不但會更近一步萎縮, 還因為在齒頸部接近牙根的地方, 牙齒質地相較於琺瑯質的部分軟, 所以牙頸部的部分會被刷出一道凹溝, 而且會越刷越深, 甚至會使的牙神經暴露!
