但是近年大家發現，植牙不只要補骨，植牙也需要 補牙齦肉 ，牙齦又稱為「角質化牙齦」，當我們缺牙久了或是長期牙周病，角質化牙齦會漸漸萎縮變成粘膜，而粘膜不會因為植牙過後重新長回來，所以牙科醫師會取後方上顎的角質化牙齦，填補到要植牙的位置，目的是要讓植牙可以再加深一次保護。

補牙齦肉的過程請醫師來分享 醫師會先評估牙齦肉是否夠厚、夠深，讓植牙種下去後不會有影響，接著，醫師會刮取上顎後方的部分牙齦，再縫合到植牙的部位，由於都是自己身體的一部份，所以結合起來後，牙齦會逐漸融合在一起，而上方被刮除的牙齦，醫師也會製作保護套，避免傷口在咬合時被刺激、碰撞。
