但是近年大家發現，植牙不只要補骨，植牙也需要 補牙齦肉 ，牙齦又稱為「角質化牙齦」，當我們缺牙久了或是長期牙周病，角質化牙齦會漸漸萎縮變成粘膜，而粘膜不會因為植牙過後重新長回來，所以牙科醫師會取後方上顎的角質化牙齦，填補到要植牙的位置，目的是要讓植牙可以再加深一次保護。

由於缺牙會讓牙齦萎縮，如果植牙後沒有 補牙齦肉 ，牙齦太薄或是太淺，就有可能會露出植牙下方的金屬植體，不僅有礙觀瞻，更可能因為刷牙或是咬合時繼續耗損其他牙齦，就會有植牙脫落的風險，所以現在許多植牙醫師，不只會幫患者重新建立健康的骨頭，更會在植牙時也重新建立角質化牙齦，讓植牙可以使用更久。
